In November 1942, The Japanese army set a world record for marching endurance by covering 100 miles down the Malay Peninsula in 72 hours.
Japanese Occupation of Singapore & Malaya MILITARY GOVERNMENT ESTABLISHED:
- Singapore and Malaya were renamed “Syonan-to” and “NewMalai” respectively
- Creation of Malay Consultative Councils (8 provinces) chaired by the Japanese Governor and the Sultans as Vice Chairman. The Sultan and members could only advise the Chairman.
- The Sultans remained as head of state with no administrative power but only on matters concerning Malay customs and Islam
- Siamese rule over Kedah, Perlis, Kelantan & Trengganu was restored as a reward for cooperating with the Japanese
- Japanese Military Administration demanded full cooperation supported by the notorious Kempeitai (secret police)
OTHER EFFECTS
- Nipponisation of people–Japanese Systemof Education, Japanese language “Nippon-go” at primary schools, national anthem,Japanese customs, traditions and culture and controlling people through propaganda
- Decline in economy–tin and rubber industries declined, import and export market cut off and unemployment
- Shortage of foods & other necessities–shortage of imported foodstuff, Japanese food growing campaign, substitution
- The issue of paper money and black market–flood of “banananotes” and blackmarket
- Poor public health services–hospitals looted for medical supplies by Japanese, preventive measures against diseases neglected

- Supported China against Japanese since 1937-collected large sums of money
- Japanese mistrust of Chinese in Malaya
- Fierce Chinese resistance against the Japanese–thousands massacred
- Allowed to continue trade and business
- Forced to donate $50 mil in 1942

The Malays
- Treated less harshly; cooperation and support needed
- Directed propaganda at Malays as they were indigenous and the largest group
- Told Malays they were the rightful owner of Malaya and would eventually gain independence
- Grew to hate Japanese-starvation, fear and suffering
The Indians
- Treated better in the beginning; confidence and support needed
- Japanese promise to free India; India Independence League and India National Army; unsuccessful invasion of India 1943
- 250K forced to work at Death Railway (100K death)
- Grew to hate and distrust Japanese; joined resistance groups

THE RISE OF MILITARY RESPONSE During the occupation a guerilla resistance force battled the Japanesefrom the jungles of Malaya. Groups such as the Malayan People's Anti-Japanese Army (MPAJA) and Force 136 were involved in the bulk of anti-Japanese resistance during the occupation.

- Instrument of surrender– “We, acting by command of and in behalf of the Emperor of Japan, the Japanese Government, and the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters, hereby accept provisions set forth in the declaration set forth by the heads of the Governments of United States, China and Great Britain on 26 July 1945 at Potsdam, and subsequently adhered to by the United of Soviet Socialists Republics, which four powers are hereafter referred to as the Allied Powers. We hereby proclaim the unconditional surrender to the Allied Powers of the Japanese Imperial Generals Headquarters and of all Japanese armed forces and all armed forces under the Japanese control wherever situated”
- 12 September 1945: Lt Gen Itagaki surrendered to Lord Louis Mountbatten, Allied Supreme Commander at the Municipal Building in Singapore
